I purchased 2 watches for Skiing purposes. Most ski resorts have clocks everywhere, some are harder to find. I decided that in order to always know what time it was (so we can be at the pre appointed point on time) I would get us watches.
This came in handy for my running around the apartment complex. Running is not enough I need to know how long it took and if I am getting better over time (I have already improved in the shorter lap by about 30 seconds). I was psyched to see if I could keep my average time for 2 laps at about the same 20 minutes that it took the first time I ran it. I made decent time on the first lap (about 21 minutes, what I stopped briefly to talk to someone). Unfortunately I did not take the time to actually learn to use the split time feature on my handy new watch before actually attempting it.
I have to guess that the 2 laps took between 40-45 minutes.
On a side note, I woke up this morning to wood pieces all over the girls cage. At first I saw one or two and thought that Pat had given them. Then I checked out the rest of the cage and wood pieces were every where. I keep a bag of wood pieces on top of the cage, up until last night I kept them on the side of the cage with out the shelf. Last night it was set on the wrong side and apparently they had no problem chewing away the plastic bag and littering the cage with yummy bark bites (many of which were sampled). I have learned my lesson. and will keep extra's far from the cage

In or Out?
I spent 45 Minutes of my commute home trying to decide if I was going to hit the treadmill or run outside. The last 15 minutes were to convince myself that running outside was the better choice.
I ran the long loop today (distance to be determined but somewhere in the neighborhood of 1.5-2 miles). It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, unfortunately it was faster then I thought it would be leaving me to run another short lap to get the basic 30 minutes in. It took me 20:52.61 to run this lap. Slowing down is not an option but I wish their was another 10 minutes worth of running in one lap I guess I will have to just do 2 laps.
Last night I added another small lap decreasing my time to 7:18.96. Adding a stopwatch to these laps may make it interesting.

Mountains
That is what we were facing today. It must have been more then 2 weeks. I have never seen so much dirty laundry. It took all morning! 10 Loads at least. One big benefit (besides it being free occasionally) is it gets put away slowly over time a few loads at a time instead of all at once. Unfortunately it took so long that I skipped a good workout. After it was all done I ran one short lap (7:53.87) that's less then 10 minutes of exercise. I guess that will be my day off (didn't i just have another Friday?).
The run was much better then the first, I wish I had timed the first lap. But I was happy with my new time.
Then we went to dinner at PF Changs again. I love that restaurant! We both tried new dishes. Pat loved his dish (I have no idea what it was). I wasn't so thrilled with my Vegetable coconut curry. I asked what was in it because the ingredients are not listed on the menu. The waitress listed a few vegetables so I requested that she make sure their were no mushrooms or chestnuts. I was surprised when I got the dish that half of it was tofu, which I hate. and they had sprinkled peanuts on the top, more of a pet peeve. Though the sauce was ok I was disappointed that half of my dish was wasted. When I asked for the ingredients I would think Peanuts and tofu would be listed. At least she asked if their were any food allergies. Next time back to the same old! or maybe that beef and peppers that was calling my name.

Stress
My job dos not normally stress me out. Today it did. I have a customer that is nearly crazy and will drive only a few types of vehicles. While most picky people accept the we will do our best he wanted a guarantee that we can not make.
I can not go into all of the craziness I will say every one around me knew when I was talking to him and got a great laugh. 5:00 could not come fast enough.
A nice game of tennis with Pat and leftovers for dinner and I forgot all about my day. I tried a new wine tonight that tasted good at first then when the after taste hit it was like vinegar. It's a shame the bottle was so cute!

Most Embarassing Moment EVER!
My boss came for a meeting today. As we were waiting I was telling him about Pat's trip to Crater of Diamonds State Park (it was relevant to the conversation). Anyway he asked how big it was. Having no idea I tried looking it up in google.
I did have the name a little incorrect (chain of crater diamonds). For future reference the webpage is http://www.craterofdiamondsstatepark.com/. What I found was very different. It was a porn site blocked by Palisades. I pointed it out and laughed, their was no danger of getting an eyeful so it was funny. The problem came when I went to close that webpage. Sigh. It opened another porn site that was not blocked. I didn't see any photo's just the word PORN and my brain panicked, I could not close that page fast enough. and unfortunately it did not close very fast.
The Peanut gallery (my boss) at that point was laughing and trying to get me to turn around to see how embarrassed I was. I refused, letting him know that nothing he could say would make me turn around as my face was RED and getting worse! If he had just let it go I would have been fine! After a few minutes the redness went away. Unfortunately the teasing never will.
I have to admit, it is darn funny!

Tennis Success
I am not sure what has gotten into me but I have been sleeping in on the weekends. As a trend it is a bad thing, as an individual day it is great to wake up after 8am. Even better, Pat made breakfast! It was so close to the time the gym opened that I decided to roll the dice and go later (in this small gym it could mean that I will not get a machine). Today it worked out for me the only one who was in today was one of the regular guy's. I had my choice. Yet I still wimped out and chose the easier elliptical. (I had a mild headache).
While walking home from my workout I noticed that the tennis court was unlocked. Instead of waiting and having to get the key later we decided to go and play right then.
We both Suck! And it was awesome. we played for almost an hour before I gave in. It took many tries to get past 2 consecutive hits, 5 felt like we were superstars! I have an odd habit of jumping for the ball, even when I do not have to. It makes me look more professional (even when I miss the ball by a mile).
I did learn early not to reach for balls. one of the first bad returns from Pat I decided I could get if I just reached a little. Not only did I miss, I did not remain upright. It was the only fall of the day and no injuries were sustained.
After all that exercise I was tired! I ate a HUGE lunch and took a nap. A very long Nap. Hopefully I will be able to sleep tonight, if not at least my headache is gone.

Tennis take 1
Pat at some point in his life enjoyed playing tennis. He played in middle school.
With all of the beautiful weather we have been having (yesterday not included). I was trying to think of an outdoor activity that would be new and fun. I have no Idea what made me think of that at Walmart today but I walked away with 2 new rackets and a bag of balls.
Pat was very excited about the idea as we have courts at the apartment which makes it very convenient. at about 2pm we set out for the courts (Our downstairs neighbor is still moving in which made it an adventure, they moved stuff off of the truck and onto the yard and parking lot). After braving the jungle of furniture we arrived at our destination to find the courts locked. This is not really a surprise they lock it and have a key at the gym and at the front office. Apparently the office hours have changed. When we arrived at the office it was locked up tight and was only open now on Sunday's.
We walked the long way around because I remembered that one of the apartment walls was close enough to the road/parking lot that we could hit the ball a little, thus preventing a total loss of amusement for the afternoon. It would have been a great idea if the whole wall was made of brick. Pat hit the upper wall a few times leaving me to wonder how loudly they could hear it in the apartment. Just after the 2nd time he hit the upper wall and I called it quits the ball went flying into a drain. Another sign that it was not a great idea.
We will try again tomorrow.

Snow globe effect
Welcome to Spring!
We awoke today to big fluffy snowflakes! I didn't even believe Pat when he told me, I just laughed at him. He insisted so I went to the window to check it out. It was beautiful! I wish I had taken a photo, but it was early and thinking is not my specialty at 7am. So you'll have to take my word for it.
Part of what made it so beautiful is the fact that it was not sticking to any of the roads. The trees were nicely covered and it was coming down pretty fast, but nothing on the roads. The snow barely affected my commute! That's what I call beautiful.

Spring?
Today was beautiful! I didn't even need a jacket to go to the gym (it was a short walk from my car, but still). Pat called in the middle of my workout to ask where I was. I explained that I was at the gym (as he should have known). He remembered my leaving the gym bag at home, yesterday.
He invited me for a walk after my workout (which I could easily get used to). I love our spring/summer walks it's the only downside of winter. It was great to enjoy the nice weather. Even better was the cleaning Pat had done before I got home.

Bad Habit
I have a bad habit, well many but one I will touch on today. It takes me forever to switch the clock in my car after the clocks officially change. This season is no different. Normally I remember to take the time change into account but tonight after the doctors appointment it was forgotten.
I was so excited to be getting home so much earlier then expected. The gym may even be a possibility. Then I walked in the door and lost an hour all over again. That just hurts.
No I did not learn my lessen the clock is still an hour off.

Pacing
I lost my MP3 player again. It doesn't happen often but I have lost it 2 times in the last month or so. Last time I remembered that I left it in my jacket pocket (my gym jacket). Anyway it was found with in a day. This time I had no Idea where it went. It was not in the car, the laundry, stray pockets or under the normal mail clutter that is in the apartment. I lost it Thursday, by this morning I was cleaning and pacing. I wanted to go to the gym but refuse to go with out my personal music player.
So at about 11 am Pat called me out on my pacing. I was about to say that I wasn't pacing that i was cleaning but at that point it just was not true.
To swtich gears I went over to my donation pile and was about to look through it when I saw my MP3 player. I shreeked and danced around when pat came over and said 'WE FOUND IT!"
'Um we?' I said
'I did help look, though you did find it' he replied
I had a short but great workout and look forward to many more with my found mp3 player.

The Value of a Quarter
Pat and I finished the laundry early today. Unfortunately my laundry quarter purse was empty before the cloths were all dry (pat consolidated 2 washers into one dryer, they didn't dry because it was too full). So he went on a quarter hunt in the apartment then added the additional quarters to the dryer that needed another cycle.
When we went back to get the dry cloths i noticed 2 of the 3 dryers are still running. I was all set to come back in 10 minutes when pat said that he added an additional quarter to the end dryer because he had an extra one.
'you mean you put an extra quarter in the free dryer?'
'What' replies Pat
'You put an extra quarter in a dryer that did not require quarters?' I asked again.
'It gave it an extra 10 minutes' says pat.
'if you had just pushed the button you would have received a free 11 minutes' I said
'I didn't know it was free'
The washers at the apartment complex are occasionally free. This is obviously a mistake as it is normally only one or two of the 4. It is easy to tell because they don't flash a price (washers) or ask only for the additional .25 (dryers). Apparently Pat's powers of observation only apply to his day job. In the end that $.25 was worth every wasted penny as an amusement for the morning.
As for the afternoon we went to the season's first rock show. I do like looking at the fossils and the sparkly rocks but strenuously object to bringing any home. Pat loves to look as well as collect. We have an apartment full of rocks. He (since I started objecting) sticks to the small ones which is nice because they can be hidden away. (not from me but for me). Today's show was nice and small with a surprising amount of fossils. It was a nice day together.

Never Ending Day
Have you ever had a day in which time actually went backwards? That is me today. Normally days like this their is little to do or little gets done but today I got lots done but the time was just not passing. Even running errands which can break up a slow moving day and get it going did not work for me.
Hopefully the gym will be on a different time schedule. I like my workout but if i have to watch every second march by it will definitely put a damper on things. This is assuming their are working machines today as we are still 3 treadmills down. This makes a huge difference in such a small gym.

Great News!
I realised that I only checked the ingredients of the chocolate covered Raspberries and only assumed the chocolate covered cherries would have the same red dye as they have pretty much the same color.
When I realised my mistake I grabbed the box of chocolate covered cherries to check the list. I fully expected to see carmine on the list. to my surprise it is dyed with red dye 40. I had to look carmine up on the computer because it can also be listed as red dye #4 (I couldn't remember the number). I am elated. Pat can eat the raspberries (nothing grosses him out) and I'll eat the cherries hoping that red #40 is not a petroleum based food coloring (many are). I'll wait to look that up until after I have eaten the box. Why ruin the box I have already purchased?
I'm starting to think I need to switch to an organic diet. FYI Carmine is considered a 'natural' food coloring because it is derived from natural sources. Their are surprisingly few colors that can be produced by natural means.

Broken Hearted
My most favorite chocolates is colored with Carmine. One of the most disgustingly derived food colorings around.
Pat and I went on a date last night. Dinner was at PF Changs (thanks David and Angela). It was very enjoyable and delicious.
After dinner we went to a book store, while in the book store I realized that their was a Harry and David in the mini mall that we were at. I LOVE their chocolate covered cherries and couldn't resist being so close to the store. We ended up with both the cherries and chocolate covered raspberries (they were 2 for 20).
While eating them today I stupidly decided to check the ingredient list. They use Carmine for the nice red color for the outer chocolate shell. You can read all about it here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carmine. But in a nutshell they boil bug carcases and use the bug broth (some sources list using the bug shells ground up as well) to color all sorts of foods and products.
I tried to enjoy my chocolates but dispite loving them for years I just can not bring myself to eat them. Hopefully time will heal this wound and allow me to enjoy them again one day. (If you know of any good ones that are not colored at all let me know!)

Pumpkin Bread
The substitution turned out ok. I think I will add more pumpkin next time as it was a tiny little bit dry. It tasted just fine so it will all get consumed (likely by me). I made plenty and froze some (with out labels so it will be guess the quick bread when we go to eat some from the freezer). Hopefully it will be just as good out of the freezer. Next time they will come out perfect and if they don't I think I will stay with this recipe and just not fool around with it.
I have about one cup or so of buttermilk left which leaves me another big batch of banana bread next weekend. it's a good thing I like to eat.
I would like to day that i worked out today and it HURT. I'm guessing the cold has not gone completely from my system yet.

Not my fault
The gym was closed today. I was all set to go and it was not.
It was a nice evening off though with as many evenings I have taken off lately I'd say it was not needed. Soon it will be light out again and I will be able to walk around the neighborhood if the gym is closed.

Back on track
Or not.
One of the treadmills was fixed when I got to the gym today. To bad someone else beat me to it. It ended up being a good thing. While I felt allot better I got out of breath quickly! The worst part? My nose HURT. I'm not sure if it is a cold thing or what but about where my sinuses reach my nose hurt and nothing really helped. It is the strangest feeling and hopefully that will be the only time that will happen.
I took it nice and easy so other then my nose I felt pretty good.

Is it a cold?
I can hardly say I have a cold. I'm not quite sick enough. Still tissues must always be at hand and my energy level is down, not to mention the fact that one flight of stairs gets me winded.
I have stayed away from the gym for a few reasons this week. That is one of them. The only legitimate one.
I'm hoping another good night of rest will bring me back to the gym. (and maybe some sanity).

Snow, Glorious snow!
Today Somerset got 6 inches or so over night. This gave me the opportunity to work out of the local rental branch near my house. 15 minutes is how long it takes to get there in bad weather (ironically longer in bad traffic, but that's for another day). It is a huge improvement from my normal one hour commute. It also allows me to see the rental branch at work which reminds me how hectic it is in rental and that I would definitely prefer to stay in my current position.
Jen joined me at the rental branch (my counterpart at the other claims center) it was nice to work with her in the same office. we work together over the phone all the time, i guess it's the whole putting a face with a name thing. I had already met her so maybe not.
The gym was closed when pat drove by but that didn't really matter, after working at the rental branch and freezing my behind off all day I wanted to eat a nice worm dinner and sit by the heater. I did walk over around 7 and all the working machines were filled (we are now down to 2 cardio machines). If pat weren't seriously talking about moving (I'm hoping for Albany) I would look into joining a different Gym. but i don't want to pay NY fitness prices and the somerset fitness equipment was not the best.

Baking
This was the weekend of baking. I had some Bananas over ripe and a craving for banana bread. While at the store for the small foil loafs tins, the pumpkin spoke to me and i figured if I was making one yummy quick bread i mite as well add another. So I picked up some pumpkin as well. The original excuse for making them was to try out the new silicone baking cups and see how well they work. In reality it has been a while. I missed the smell of fresh baked goodies. (The taste too).
The banana bread came out just fine. I have a good go to recipe for that.
The pumpkin bread I had a Recipe I liked but didn't hold onto it, unfortunate really. One of the things I don't like about most of the recipes for pumpkin bread is that they all have oil as the fat. I just don't keep vegetable oil in the house. I had not really planed ahead so all that was in the house was Olive Oil. Olive Oil has a distinct taste to it. To save you the future trouble let me say that it does not taste good in pumpkin bread. I will have to make another batch this weekend to redeem myself. (to myself as Pat seems to like the pumpkin bread anyway).
And no I'm not going to go out and get oil. I'm going to make my banana bread recipe with pumpkin and spices. If it turns out then I will forever have a great banana bread and pumpkin bread recipe. Then I can worry about other things like getting the Pulled pork to turn out better. Or at all.
